Willie Stewart Academy student Janelle Williams is an overcomer.   

She demonstrated that in her final year of high school, as she dug in with new motivation and confidence in her academic and personal life.  

WSA team member Amy Jonson shared that Janelle came into her own with academic skill, maturity and strength of character, and that it was a delight to watch Janelle creatively and joyfully express herself.  

Janelle credits Willie Stewart Academy as a place that helped her thrive. She shared about her experience there and her hopes for the future. 

What is an accomplishment you’re proud of? 

I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Willie Stewart Academy is a place where I feel seen and heard. The staff here help support my dreams but also help me stay grounded – I need both at the same time. Their care helped me find the motivation to do more than I ever thought I would.   

What are your plans for next year? 

I’m looking forward to independent life with a job and a car. I’m proud I will have achieved graduating high school and can enjoy that. I hope to make music as a singer and songwriter. I’ve been singing in school choirs since I was four years old. The song I’m currently writing focuses on storytelling in an R&B style. I’m writing about personal and relatable things.   

Where have you shown the most grit in your high school career?  

This school year. I used to struggle with motivation, but I owed it to myself and my mom to do my best. I’ve learned a lot. I even encouraged a friend to join me, and we are both on track to graduate.   

What words would you use to describe yourself? 

I would say I’m funny, loving, and strict - strict in the sense that I don’t mind being silly, but don’t be disrespectful. My friends and family say I’m funny, motherly, protective, talented, and caring.
